Election year 2024 starts with the elections for the European Parliament, one of the biggest exercises of democracy in the world and of great importance for all EU citizens and residents. Decisions taken at the level of the European Parliament have direct legal effect, and it is also up to them, for example, how public money is spent through the EU common budget and how the European single market is regulated.
On top of that, these are turbulent political times in Europe, where an increasing number of politicians do not embrace democracy, the rule of law, the fight against discrimination and other values of an open society. It is therefore essential to turn out to vote in June, but also to understand who the candidates are and what values, visions and policies they will stand for in the European Parliament once elected.
That is why we are organizing a public debate on 20 April with a number of representatives of the parties on the voting lists to facilitate communication between the candidates and the diaspora in Berlin.
The debate will consist of a short moderated discussion during which the candidates will introduce themselves and discuss on the basis of pre-determined topics set by us, and a question and answer session with the audience.
